WA drivers making more ‘poor decisions’ on busier roads

The majority of WA drivers believe aggression, distraction and congestion are getting worse on the state’s roads.

More than 370 drivers responded to RAC’s latest survey – the Transport Priorities Survey – with the majority saying those issues have become ‘worse’ or ‘much worse’ over the past two years.

Last year WA recorded its worst level of road deaths in a decade, and 2025 is on track to be even higher.

RAC General Manager External Relations Will Golsby said too many drivers have become complacent and are still making poor decisions behind the wheel.

“All road users need to understand the terrible reality of what is happening on our roads – too many lives are being lost and serious injuries sustained,” Golsby said.

“These are real people with families and communities who are left shattered by the consequences.

“It’s shocking that despite the many warnings and campaigns, members are still seeing drivers acting aggressively, driving too fast and getting distracted by their devices.”

Golsby said more government investment was needed to improve safety on our roads.

“It’s good to see the WA and Australian governments funding important projects, including regional road safety upgrades and new road safety cameras,” he said.

“With WA’s population continuing to boom and road fatalities at crisis levels in WA, we need to see more action in educating road users, upgrading our riskiest roads and intersections, and reviewing speed limits.”
