Sean Astin’s shockingly ‘small’ ‘Lord of the Rings’ payday forced him to sell home

Sean Astin sold his home at the height of his “Lord of the Rings” fame, thanks to his shockingly “small” payday.

“There was a disconnect between the attention that I was getting and how much money we had,” the actor, who previously revealed he made $250,000 playing Samwise Gamgee in the beloved film franchise, told The Guardian on Monday.

“It was not a lot of money! In fact, I had to sell my house because I negotiated such a small amount on the trilogy,” the Oscar nominee, 55, continued, noting that he was “not prepared for that level of visibility and access.”

Astin clarified that he is now “very comfortable financially.”

The “Goonies” star described selling his home on the “Jim & Sam Show” in 2017, telling listeners he “bought a house up in the hills with a view” and needed to make $250,000 a year to satisfy the mortgage and insurance — and then nabbed his “LOTR” role.

He received $75,000 — and “no residuals” but “a little bit of merch” — for each of the three movies: “The Fellowship of the Ring,” “The Two Towers” and “The Return of the King.”

Astin recalled, “It was an offer for $250,000 for a year and a half. And I was like, ‘Wait a minute, my pen signed this contract, which obligated me to $250,000 a year, and I’m gonna sign this contract, which will make it so that I absolutely cannot satisfy that other thing.’”

However, when asked whether he “renegotiated” later, he noted that “when it came time to do publicity for the third film,” he was “feeling a little bit better” financially.

“We’re not supposed to talk about that thing, but yes, [they took care of me],” he quipped. “By then, I had done a lot of other work, and we were fine. I’m not asking for anyone to feel sorry for me because of money.”

Astin’s fellow “LOTR” co-stars have divulged their “not massive salaries” over the years, with Elijah Wood speaking out most recently.

“Because we weren’t making one movie and then renegotiating a contract for the next, it wasn’t the sort of lucrative scenario that you could sort of rest easy for the rest of your life,” the 45-year-old, who played Frodo Baggins, told Business Insider of the “real gamble” in April 2025.

The “Yellowjackets” alum added, “The benefit of that was that we were also signing up for something that was going to be a part of our lives forever.”

Orlando Bloom, who played Legolas, revealed to Howard Stern in 2019 that he brought home $175,000 for the trilogy — but he’d “do it again for half the money.”

On “Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen” in 2024, Cate Blanchett, whose character is Galadriel, joked that “no one got paid anything” but “free sandwiches.”

Andy Serkis is currently directing the latest movie in the franchise, “The Hunt for Gollum,” and Stephen Colbert is co-writing “Shadow of the Past.”

When Astin was asked on Monday whether he’d negotiate better pay if he’s involved in either movie, he declared that’s “goddamn right.”
