Swimming ban at Biggera Waters after sewer main break

Fishermen have been told not to eat anything they catch at a popular Gold Coast spot after a sewage leak.

The city said a sewer main broke on Harbour Quays Drive at Biggera Waters on Monday night, leaking 400,000 litres of sewage into Biggera Creek.

The canals flow into the Broadwater, an area of the coast protected by South Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah), which is popular with recreational fishers.

Sewage may have leaked into the Broadwater from canals in Biggera Waters.

The council said no recreational swimming areas were impacted, but signs have been put up telling people not to swim.

Council installed signs at Quota Park at the mouth of Biggera Creek on Tuesday night, as well as at Ryder Park boat ramp, Stradbroke North Park, and along Coombabah Road and Lae Drive.

People should not eat fish or crabs from the area for the next three days, a council spokesperson said.

Test results showed higher levels of Enterococci – a sign that water had been contaminated by sewage, the spokesperson said.

The council said no regularly used recreational swimming areas had been impacted.
