Rainy start to New Year’s Day predicted with thunderstorm activity

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for south-east Queensland as the state prepares to celebrate New Year’s Eve.

Severe thunderstorms likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding were detected near Cunninghams Gap, Rosevale and Borumba Dam and were moving east to northeast, the BOM warned.

Parts of Ipswich, Gympie, Logan, Somerset, Scenic Rim, Sunshine Coast, Southern Downs, Lockyer Valley and Noosa Council Areas were all likely to be affected.

Brisbane was experiencing high winds and rain across the city on Wednesday evening as New Year’s Eve revellers gathered in popular viewing spots.

The first day of the new year is set to be wet in Brisbane.

“Around the Brisbane area it’s probably more likely into the early hours of New Year’s Day rather than impacting New Year’s Eve, so fingers crossed on that one,” senior forecaster Daniel Hayes said on Tuesday.

Hayes predicted showers could linger through the weekend and into next week.

New Year’s Day’s maximum was forecast to be 31 degrees.
