Lightly raced Bails has others stumped as she eyes third consecutive win at Monday’s Murwillumbah meeting

A home-track mare is set to continue her climb through the ranks when she tackles her longest journey at Monday’s Murwillumbah meeting.

Lightly raced Bails is part of another strong team from the leading Matthew Dunn stable and is eyeing off a third consecutive win at just her fourth start.

A sparingly raced daughter of top class Pierro, Bails steps up to a benchmark 66 handicap over 2020m from two very versatile victories.

Last month at only her second start she stalked the speed at the Gold Coast over 1800m before careering away late to land her maiden after being backed from $3.10 into $2.80. Then 17 days ago she returned home and was ridden from the back over further when charging late to beat a handy class 1 field.

That form is a good sign for her crack at a higher level, and potentially a start in midweek metropolitan company over the border, or even freshened up for a Saturday Highway tilt in NSW.

Jumping from a low draw in a competitive race, Bails is about $3.70 in early betting ahead of Gold Coast duo Aldeenaary ($5) and Tropic Sands ($6), with stablemate Tietar about the $6.50 mark.

And she should only get better as the journeys lengthen. Bails is out of an unraced Irish mare that in turn was by top-class sire Cacique, a dual northern hemisphere group 1 winner up to 2200m.

Like many similar border battles of the past, the Dunn stable will be the big stumbling block for a swag of south-east Queensland runners heading south.
