Kelly Ripa reveals the signal she gives Mark Consuelous that they’re not having sex

Kelly Ripa shared that when she put her retainer in at night, her husband, Mark Consuelos, knows they won’t be having sex.

The revelation came after the couple discussed the mating habits of koala bears on “Live with Kelly and Mark” Wednesday, with Consuelos sharing that male koalas aren’t bothered when female koalas aren’t in the mood.

“When they’re mating, the koala goes in there and says, ‘Hey, I’m Mr. Koala, nice to meet you, Ms. Koala.’ Sometimes they’re not interested,” Consuelos said. “Instead of being heartbroken, they go back to sleep.”

Ripa, 55, immediately quipped, “It’s like you!”

The television personality then hilariously acted out her turning her back on Consuelos and popping her retainer in — which she said is a clear sign the two wouldn’t be getting intimate that night.

“He hears the retainer pop in, it’s like a chastity belt,” she joked.

Consuelos, 55, agreed, making fun of the the loud sounds his wife makes when putting on her retainer.

“When you put it in, it’s like, click, click, click,” he explained. “Alright, guess I’m going to bed.”

He also cracked, “I come to bed with my little eucalyptus leaf, and I’m like, ‘Hey, you want to fool around? No? Okay.’”

Ripa said that was her husband’s attitude as well, sharing that once she puts on her retainer for the night, it’s a signal they’re not going to have sex that night. The couple is pictured here in September 2025. Getty Images

Ripa admitted last July she was repulsed by morning sex — even though that’s her husband’s preference.

“I said to him, ‘Here’s the thing,’” she said on Amanda Hirsch’s “Not Skinny But Not Fat” podcast. “‘There needs to be a yin and a yang here. It can’t always be your way. ‘Cause it feels like 90 percent of the time it’s your way. And now that we work together every day, it’s gonna have to sometimes be my way, and my way’s at night only.’”

Ripa said Consuelos also liked to kiss her in the morning, but that she’s definitely not into it — again referencing her retainer.

“I have a retainer in. I gotta rip that out,” she explained. “And he’s got his nasal strips on. It’s like we are the most repulsive, disgusting [people.]”

“The greatest thing about this job, this thing has like, almost repulsed him from morning time during the work week,” she added. “Which is like a miracle.”

She jokingly prayed, “May this show last until he suffers from erectile dysfunction.”

Earlier this month, Consuelos confirmed on their daytime talk show that filming “Live with Kelly and Mark” prohibited them from having morning sex.

“I’ve got to tell you, this job has really gotten in the way of that. It’s been the antidote for it,” the “Riverdale” alum admitted.
