Chris Hansen will decide if he’s suing over Robert Pattinson movie about his life — if he ever gets to see it
Never mind “To Catch a Predator” — to catch a movie is the real problem.
“To Catch A Predator” legend Chris Hansen maintains a genially optimistic attitude about the new Robert Pattinson movie about his life.
But he tells Page Six he’s open to the possibility of suing over it — if, that is, he can ever actually watch it.
Hansen told Page Six that buzzy studio A24 only told him about “Primetime” starring Robert Pattinson in May of this year, and when he tried to see it at a screening last week at its New York HQ, he was turned away because he refused to sign an NDA.
Now he says he’s left to see the flick in theaters like everyone else when it comes out on September 5.
While Hansen says A24 staffers have been perfectly pleasant and he has faith the movie will be fair, he’s also prepared to be disappointed.
“When someone makes a movie about you but won’t let you see it, you do have to wonder why they won’t let you see it,” Hansen told us of the film, which is based on the 2007 Esquire article, “Tonight on Dateline This Man Will Die.”
Hansen told us that the studio — which is behind zeitgeist-y hits including “Marty Supreme,” “Eurphoria,” the “Brutalist” and more — told him it didn’t need to reach out to him about the flick because it’s a fictionalized portrayal that’s only “inspired” by his story.
But he and his lawyers are not yet convinced.
He said that once he’s seen how he’s portrayed, he’ll consider his “right to a [legal] remedy.”
But, he said, “At this point it’s about courtesy. If you make a movie using someone’s name and likeness, you’d think you’d reach out to them about it.”
He said that when production did get in touch with him, they had a “dialogue.”
Meanwhile, Hansen, who made 20 episodes of the controversial “Dateline NBC” show between 2004 and 2008, is making the most of the attention.
He told us he’s bought ads before every theater screening of the movie promoting his true crime streaming TruBlu and its “Predator”-like show, “Takedown with Chris Hansen.”
A24 declined our request for comment.
