For many, Boxing Day is time spent eating Christmas leftovers (ham toastie, anyone?), watching the Test and, of course, cruising the sales.
The origins of Boxing Day are unknown, but the day after Christmas Day has been celebrated since the Middle Ages. Records of the name first appeared in Victorian England, when servants would be given the day off, along with a box of leftover food, while in Australia, it was recognised as a public holiday back in 1871.
According to RMIT professor of advertising, Robert Crawford, Boxing Day’s bargain-hunting reputation can be traced back to a Myer advertisement printed in the Herald in 1954 fuelled by the post war economic boom.
The tradition is still alive and well. This year, despite cost of living pressures, shoppers are set to spend a record $1.6 billion in the post Christmas sales, according to the Australian Retailers Association.
