Avenel evacuated as Longwood bushfire intensifies; Hume Highway closed between Seymour, Violet Town as temperature rises amid hot weather

Authorities are investigating reports of property losses overnight as fire crews work to control an “intense” bushfire north of Melbourne.

“There have been unconfirmed reports of property losses at the Longwood fire,” a spokeswoman from the State Control Centre said.

“Crews will be undertaking assessments today to determine what the losses are and how significant.”

Residents in Avenel, Caveat, Dropmore, Highlands, Ruffy, Tarcombe, Terip Terip, as well as those in Locksley, Longwood, Longwood East, Ruffy, Tarcombe, Upton Hill are urged to evacuate the area immediately.

“Residents in the SOUTH of a line drawn from Maggies Lane to Mount Monica to Tarcombe Road, Nolans Road, Buntings Hill Road could be impacted,” the warning said.
