Why Dolly Parton, Carl Dean Never Had Kids

Dolly Parton’s cup was overflowing with ambition.

While the legendary country singer left an incredible legacy of music and social impact in the wake of her death, she and her late husband Carl Dean didn’t have any children throughout their nearly six-decade marriage.

And though Parton battled endometriosis and had a partial hysterectomy in her 30s, she never saw having kids as a top priority throughout her life. 

“When you’re a young couple, you think you’re going to have kids, but it just wasn’t one of those burning things for me,” she told Saga magazine in 2023. “I had my career and my music, and I was traveling.”

As the “Jolene” singer put it, “If I’d had kids, I’d have stayed home with them, I’m sure, and worried myself to death about them.”

While she was godmother to Miley Cyrus, Parton felt that not having kids of her own allowed her to shower other people in her life with blessings, all the way up until her Aug. 25 death at age 80 due to cancer.
