J.Crew Tiny Rollneck Sweater Launch: Emma Chamberlain Campaign

History of J.Crew’s Rollneck Sweater

J.Crew originally launched the 100% cotton sweater in 1988, and while they aren’t the original inventors of the style (historians say it dates back to medieval Europe), the retailer certainly helped it get out to the masses.

So, what makes this sweater so special? Knit from a heavyweight cotton, the sleeves are slightly raglan (with their own roll at the cuff), and as the name suggests, the neck is rolled. Dress it up or dress it down, it’s one of those pieces you’ll turn to time and time again.

In 2025 it was re-issued with a more relaxed fit, also accompanied by a celeb-filled campaign, and to say the fashion world went wild for it would be an understatement. Adding fuel to the craze through early 2026 was an uptick in ’90s nostalgia, with shoppers loving the sleek, structured aesthetic that screams “understated luxury.”

Also in 2026 came a round of designer collaborations from J.Crew ahead of NYFW, offering five remixes on the bestselling sweater. Like the Tiny Rollneck has ushered in a zipper, these fresh takes added in other elements including lace and colorblocking.
