South Africa’s Jayden Adams Dead at 25 Weeks After Playing in World Cup
The soccer community is mourning one of their own.
Two weeks after Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams played for South Africa’s men’s national soccer team (affectionately known as Bafana Bafana) at the 2026 World Cup, the athlete has died, the country’s minister of sports, arts and culture Gayton McKenzie confirmed. He was 25.
“It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams,” McKenzie said in a July 11 statement. “South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents, and our nation mourns alongside his family, his team-mates and the millions of supporters who watched him grow from a promising academy prospect into a full Bafana Bafana international.”
As officials investigate what led to Adams’ passing, McKenzie encouraged soccer fans to refrain from spreading theories about the tragic loss.
“The cause of Jayden’s passing has not yet been confirmed,” he added, “and I wish to appeal to members of the media and the public to exercise restraint and compassion, and to refrain from speculation, while his family and Mamelodi Sundowns are given the space and privacy they need at this incredibly difficult time.”
