When she’s not writing her own novels, author Emma Straub can be found curled up with a good work of fiction.

She told Page Six that within the fiction genre she prefers books “by women who can make me laugh and cry!”

Straub’s new book “American Fantasy,” which is on sale now, follows a 50-year-old divorceé who sets sail on a four-day cruise with 3,000 other women to see all five members of a famous ’90s boy band reunite.

See below for Straub’s six must-read book recommendations, great to add to any TBR, along with her new book.

Book cover for "The Noble Hustle" by Colson Whitehead.

“A hilarious story of novelist Whitehead entering the World Series of Poker. I’ve read it three times–bleak and smart and hysterically funny.”

The book cover for "A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again" by David Foster Wallace features a sepia-toned image of a young boy with his tongue sticking out, superimposed with text.

“A must-read if you’re writing about a cruise! This is another funny one, and short to boot. It doesn’t make cruises sound like much fun, but then again … maybe it does?”

Cover of Jane Austen's novel "Emma" featuring a painting of a young woman with dark hair and a white dress.

“A perfect book for readers of Page Six! Gossip, romance, matchmaking, canoodling!”

The book cover for "Heartburn" by Nora Ephron features a red heart emoji with flames.

“Ephron is maybe best known for her films and essays, but this novel, based on her own divorce, is my favorite.”

Book cover for "The Book of Love, A Novel" by Kelly Link, with black text and golden crescent and full moon shapes on a red background.

“One of my recent favorites, and the first novel by one of my all-time favorite short story writers. Weird, wonderful, and expansive.”

Book cover for "Self-Help Stories" by Lorrie Moore, featuring a medicine cabinet filled with various toiletries and medications.

“My favorite short stories of all time. This book taught me that the best voice is always your own.”
