Mason Cox nailed his audition to ruck for the Dockers against Geelong in round one, while acting captain Josh Treacy kicked five goals on Saturday in the 12.12 (84) to 9.14 (68) win at Mandurah, south of Perth.
The Crows will also be happy with the hitout ahead of their round-one blockbuster against Collingwood at the MCG, given several key players were missing through injury.
They stuck with the Dockers until well into the last quarter, when Fremantle made the most of the strong southerly wind that was the key feature of the match.
Reid only had 20-plus possessions twice in his outstanding debut season last year, playing mainly across half-forward, but on Saturday he racked up 30.
Teammate Hayden Young, whose season last year was cruelled by injury, also shone in the midfield.
Cox, who has joined the Dockers as a mature-age rookie after being delisted by Collingwood, showed signs that he can be more than just a back-up ruckman to Luke Jackson and Sean Darcy.
With Darcy not playing and Jackson having a variety of roles, Cox took his opportunity. His excellent tap set up Shai Bolton for the goal that put the Dockers in front during the final term.
There was a major scare for the Dockers in the first quarter when Jye Amiss limped off with a sore foot after a marking contest.
