What initially started as an online joke quickly spiraled into a full-blown criminal investigation, eventually leading to Bushart’s arrest and detention.

Larry reportedly shared a meme showing Donald Trump with the caption, “We have to get over it.” The caption was a reference to Trump’s 2024 response to a mass shooting at Perry High School in Iowa. Beneath the meme, Bushart wrote, “This seems relevant today.” Several members of the community reportedly interpreted the message as a threat toward Perry County High School.

Following the arrest, Larry Bushart Jr. currently faces charges of making threats of mass violence on school property and creating public hysteria. Investigators have also stated how his post caused widespread alarm, with several parents contacting law enforcement. A local sheriff from the Perry County Sheriff’s Office stated:
Creating mass hysteria in our community will not be tolerated.”
Bushart currently remains in custody, and he is now set to appear in court later this year, in December 2025.
