Queensland’s top cop taken to industrial referee over new senior job
Queensland’s top cop has been taken to the Industrial Relations Commission over claims a police union was not properly consulted on the creation of a new senior job in his office.
The Queensland Police Commissioned Officers’ Union lodged its complaint against Commissioner Steve Gollschewski with the QIRC on December 8.
The dispute is centred on the creation of a new chief superintendent role. The union argues it was not consulted effectively, as required under its industrial agreement.

“In recent times, we as a union of the commissioned officers have become concerned with how positions are being created, why they are being created,” union president Kerry Johnson said in a statement via lawyer Calvin Gnech.
“We will therefore be asking the industrial commission to rule on the appropriateness of these processes.”
A Queensland Police spokesperson told this masthead it “would not be appropriate to provide further comment” as the matter was before the QIRC.
“The Queensland Police Service values both its sworn and unsworn staff and remains committed to building a resilient and professional workforce that delivers safety and security across the state,” they said in a statement.
