Man arrested over deaths of Karl Gruber-Terrick and his father

“Dad and Karl [jnr] were our joy,” Rebecca recently told The Age. “They brought happiness … They made life a lot better.”

Karl jnr played football with the Fitzroy Stars, and his sister said he was getting his life back on track, working on the North-East Link after spending time in jail for an assault in the Northern Territory on Christmas Eve 2020.

“When he got home from Darwin, he just wanted to build his future again and … just make something of his life,” Rebecca said.

Karl snr also had a history with the criminal justice system, which relatives at Melbourne’s Invasion Day rally criticised media for focusing on immediately after his death.

They also expressed anger that no one was charged soon after the incident, but police defended their investigation.

“Victoria Police acknowledges the frustrations expressed by the families while they grieve the loss of their loved ones, and in many ways these frustrations mirror our own,” a spokesperson said in February.

“Since these deaths occurred on 16 January, investigators have worked tirelessly in an effort to identify who is responsible.”

Margaret Gruber-Terrick, meanwhile, cannot forget seeing her son cry out for help while her partner lay motionless on Observatory Street outside a relative’s home.

“We don’t know how we’re going to celebrate this little boy’s birthday again,” she told The Age through tears recently.

“How are we going to celebrate Christmas?”
